Belgium Introduces Tax On Digital Storage Devices,
by Ulrika Lomas, Tax-News.com, Brussels
Thursday, January 28, 2010
From February 1, 2010, the Belgian government aims to impose an additional tax
on the purchase of USB keys, MP3 players and external hard disks to pay for
the reproduction of audio and audiovisual works.
Auvibel, the management company responsible for the private copying of sound
and audiovisual works, urged the government to extend the existing tax to include
digital systems, given the decline in revenue from old media such as CDs and
cassettes. Up until now, the tax was only levied on blank CDs and DVDs.
Proposed by the Belgian Economy Minister, Vincent Van Quickenborne, the measure
was recently approved by the Council of Ministers.
As a result of the new regulations, consumers will soon have to pay an additional
EUR3 for an iPod with a flash memory of 64 GB. From February 1, the cost of
a hard disk of more than 1 TB will be an additional EUR9.
